Moroccan Riads: The Soul Hidden Behind the Walls.

Moroccan Riads: The Soul Hidden Behind the Walls.

Ah, riads… After all these years sourcing treasures from Morocco for my shop, they still fascinate me. A riad is an introverted house: from outside, nothinga blind, discreet, almost shy façade. But push open the door, and a whole world unfolds: an open-air central courtyard, often adorned with a fountain or pool, surrounded by galleries and rooms that all face inward, toward family life.

The decor there is a language of its own. Zellige, that hand-cut ceramic mosaic, dresses floors and walls in hypnotic geometric patterns. Tadelakt, a lime plaster polished with stone, gives walls a silky texture and deep colorsochre, terracotta, Majorelle blue. Carved wooden ceilings, moucharabieh screens filtering the light, wrought-iron lanterns casting stars on the walls at night:everything is designed to create precious intimacy.

And how are they used? A riad isn't just decor, it's a way of life. The courtyard is the beating heart of the home: mint tea is served there, guests are welcomed, and one breathes far from the medina's bustle. It's also an architecture of coolnessthick walls and the open courtyard naturally regulate temperature, a true climate genius ahead of its time.

At Boutique Raymond, I always keep a few decor pieces inspired by riads in the shop. If you dream of bringing a bit of this Moroccan magic home, come see me: advice is free, always with pleasure, just ask.
